Fourteen children and three adults have died in a fire that swept through a building in Paris housing African immigrants, French police say.
The fire broke out in the capital’s 13th district shortly after midnight. Thirty people were injured.
Some 200 firefighters took two hours to control the blaze and help many of the building’s 130 residents to safety.
In April, 24 people died in a fire at a Paris hotel also housing immigrants, prompting calls for better housing.

Annual NII report shows 1.5m Israelis below poverty line

In 2004, 1.534 million people in Israel lived below the poverty line, according to a National Insurance Institution (NII) poverty report released Monday.
The figure attests to a substantial rise in poverty rates, with 100,000 more poor Israelis in 2004 than there were in 2003.
The report also shows that the number of poor families make up 20.3 percent of Israel’s population. The number of children living in poor families has reached 700,000.

In a comparison of pensions in OECD countries, Britain’s state pension ranks 26th out of 30 in the percentage of average post-tax salary it pays out.

A Vietnam veteran who froze to death alone beneath a railroad bridge on Christmas Eve is remembered in Covington. Joe Young died in single-digit cold a few blocks from a shelter where he had previously stayed and a few days before he was to move into an apartment that had been arranged for him. The Reverend Gregg Anderson of Highland Heights says friends and strangers contributed a total of $2,100 to make sure Young had a decent burial. Joe Young was 57-years old.

UNICEF has just released its annual report, which reveals most shocking figures. Almost one billion children all over the world are denied at least one of seven commodities deemed essential: shelter, water, sanitation, schooling, information, healthcare and food.
